Issue #018: A money habit that changed everything for me
and all you need was a pen...(and some paper)

Read Time: 1.7 minutes
👋 Hey Money Peeps,
Write your money sh*t down!
I could end the newsletter with that one sentence this week and I would more than happy that you had learned something valuable.
But alas, for those of you who are thinking:
“Hey Gabriel, I opened this email expecting at least 2 minutes of reading and if you don’t provide that then I’m gonna uninvest all my money just to be spiteful. Also who uses the word ALAS 😅”
My reply would be:
“Jeez, fine, I’ll give you some context, but if you ever threaten me with your investing portfolio ever again…”
I’ve always been a massive fan of keeping tabs on all things money.
Monthly spending.
Net Worth.
Business expenses.
You name it, I’ve tracked it. (love me some Excel 🤓)
I firmly believe that tracking your money is 50% of the work to getting to Personal Finance level 5.
But this week I tracked something new for the first time.
I’m planning a holiday to the Philippines in March and unlike past holidays, I thought I’d jot down everything I’d spent so far.
Nothing too hard, just hotels and flights.
And turns out, the number I totalled was already £1000 more than I expected.
It wasn’t over budget, it was just more than I thought it would be.
Why am I sharing this with you?
Well, it made me realise just how easy it is for your money to escape you.
For £1000 to disappear without you having the slightest clue of where it went.
We often think £20 here and £45 there don’t make any difference to our lives.
But they really DO!
Now I’m not asking you to track your everyday spending to the penny like I do.
But if you wouldn’t mind jotting things down so you can see them visually, rather than guesstimating where you money goes…
THAT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

If I built a MEGA Persona Finance Template would you want it?I’m thinking tabs for: Monthly Spending/Net Worth/Debt/Long term goals/Investments, and anything else you want me to include. |
👀 Thing’s I’m liking this week
Thought I’d try out a new segment this week, mainly because I stumble across lots of amazing personal finance content from other creators that it would be a shame not to share!
