A recent debate I posted went wildly viral on TikTok… so what better place to settle this argument than here in the newsletter?!
It was about something far more controversial than politics, pineapple on pizza, or whether the milk or cereal comes first…
This was about:
Whether we should or shouldn’t split the bill 🫢
Yeah… a hotter topic than I ever even realised.
Tiktok were divided, I mean PROPERLY divided
Don’t believe me? See for yourself 😂

YIKES 😬
I get it, it’s a tricky one. If I ordered pasta and a diet coke, and my friend ordered Wagyu steak and 3 cocktails - best believe we’re splitting that bill 😂
and you most definitely shouldn’t feel bad for not wanting to subsidise someone’s 4th espresso martini just because you were polite enough to sip tap water.
That said, I would follow these three steps as a guideline for future dinner dates:
Always ask the restaurant to customise the bill to what you paid for, IF it’s easy for them to do so (e.g., a few clicks of the card machine)
If it’s not easy for the restaurant to do this, and it’s pretty clear you all had similar meals, then split the bill (what goes around, comes back around I guess)
Now if both steps 1 and 2 don’t apply, if you’ve clearly not had similar meals - now it’s time to open the calculator app and pay for exactly what you had. It only takes 5 mins to figure out but remember to include the service charge if you’re splitting that too!
Now over to you guys (as between me and you, it’s your opinion that really counts to me 😉)
Do you usually ... |
Tbh I think a good way to do it is to decide upfront - although as overly polite Brits who hate talking about money… be prepared for extreme awkwardness 😅
Better that though, than delaying the awkwardness till the end of the meal.. right?
P.S. You can check out the full video and all the chaos in the comments here.
If you have any awkward bill splitting stories, I’d LOVE to hear them!
Hit reply to this email and I’ll share a few in next week’s newsletter (anonymously of course 👀).
